The Castle of Villalta is the most important medieval fortress in Friuli Venezia Giulia. It is situated in a dominant position in the heart of the Friulian plain.
Benvenuti al Castello di Villalta, il gioiello medievale del Friuli Venezia Giulia. Situato nel cuore della pianura friulana, il Maniero domina il paesaggio con la sua imponenza e storia millenaria.
The oldest document found so far about the history of Villalta Castle dates back to 1158. The fortress was besieged, destroyed, and rebuilt multiple times between the 12th and 14th centuries. Its monumental form, which we can still admire today, dates back to the expansion around 1500 when the Noble Castle part was annexed to the Mastio Tower, where the splendid finely furnished halls are still present.
In more recent events, the castle was occupied by Napoleon's troops under the command of Marshal Bernadotte and later by Austro-Hungarian forces after the defeat of Caporetto.
More recently, an important and meticulous restoration was undertaken by the Counts Marina and Sergio Gelmi di Caporiacco, the current owners, starting from the year 2000. This restoration has allowed the castle to be returned to its ancient splendor.
La sua storia affonda le radici nel 1158, anno del più antico documento rinvenuto sino ad ora sul Castello. Fonti e reperti testimoniano che tra il 1200 e il 1400, il Castello fu più volte assediato, distrutto e ricostruito. L'attuale struttura monumentale risale invece al 1500, quando alla Torre Mastio venne annessa la parte nobile del Castello, oggi sede di splendidi saloni finemente arredati.
Nel corso dei secoli, il Maniero ha vissuto momenti epici, come l'occupazione delle truppe napoleoniche guidate dal Maresciallo Bernadotte e l'insediamento di un comando austro-ungarico dopo la disfatta di Caporetto.
Nel 2000, grazie ad un’accurata opera di restauro voluta dai Conti Marina e Sergio Gelmi di Caporiacco, gli attuali proprietari, il Castello ha ritrovato il suo antico e intramontabile splendore.

Count Antonio Lucio della Torre e Valsassina is certainly the most remembered figure due to his aggressive character and perpetual conflict with the Venetian Republic. The Republic first occupied Villalta Castle and later brutally killed the "terrible" Count Lucio, sparking a series of legends about this very particular character. Other members of the family, however, gave considerable prominence to the lineage, including the famous condottiero Artico di Villalta, Bishop Adalgerio, and finally the poet Federico, unhappily in love with the beautiful Lucrezia Mantica.
Tra i numerosi personaggi che hanno segnato la storia del Castello di Villalta, il Conte Antonio della Torre e Valsassina è forse il più noto. A contraddistinguerlo furono il suo carattere indomabile e i suoi contrasti con la Serenissima, la quale occupò il Castello e successivamente uccise il "terribile" Conte Lucio, dando origine a numerose leggende su questo personaggio piuttosto singolare. Altri membri illustri del casato includono il valoroso condottiero Artico di Villalta, il vescovo Adalgerio e il poeta Federico, protagonista di un amore sfortunato e non corrisposto dalla bella Lucrezia Mantica.

The park of the Castle surrounds its walls and boundaries that stretch to the horizon. In every season, it dresses in different colors; in spring, hundreds of irises paint the park's avenues blue, providing a backdrop to our guests' walks. In summer, the scent of wildflowers and many acacias fills the air. Autumn offers fantastic scenes with its fiery colors of the trees and the American vine, which dyes the castle walls red. The park also features ancient olive trees, fruit trees, and beehives.
Villalta Castle has its own production of high-quality typical products: olive oil, limoncello, nocino, honey, and jams.
Il parco del Castello, che circonda le antiche mura, è un’oasi di bellezza che ad ogni stagione si veste con colori diversi e i cui confini si perdono all’orizzonte. In primavera, i viali si tingono di blu con centinaia di iris in fiore. In estate, il parco è pervaso dai profumi dei fiori spontanei e delle acacie. L'autunno regala panorami mozzafiato con i colori infuocati degli alberi e della vite americana che avvolgono e tingono di rosso le mura del castello.
Nel parco troverete ulivi secolari, alberi da frutto e arnie. Il castello produce prodotti tipici di alta qualità, come olio d'oliva, limoncello, nocino, miele e marmellate, offrendovi un assaggio autentico di questa terra straordinaria.

The Noble Family
The ownership of Villalta Castle, currently belonging to the Gelmi di Caporiacco Counts, was for centuries held by the Lords of Villalta-Caporiacco and later by the Counts della Torre, who provided three Patriarchs to Aquileia. The Lords of Villalta, a branch of the ancient lineage of the Caporiacco family, boast origins dating back to Roman (Cavorius) and Celtic times, much like the consanguineous branch of the Castle (now Frangipane). They are among the most important historical families of the Friuli Homeland.
Il Castello di Villalta, attualmente proprietà della Famiglia dei Conti Gelmi di Caporiacco, è stato per secoli dimora dei signori di Villalta-Caporiacco e successivamente dei Conti della Torre, che dettero tre Patriarchi ad Aquileia. I signori di Villalta, un ramo dell'antichissima stirpe dei Caporiacco, vantano origini romane (Cavorius) e celtiche, così come il ramo consanguineo dei Castello, oggi Frangipane, riconosciute come le più importanti famiglie storiche del Friuli.
